The hillsides of the volcanic range are lined with rocks dating to the Cretaceous & Tertiary periods -- between 4 million & 1.8 million years ago, respectively.

The Buttes, which are said to have been formed during those times changed with California's landscape from an inland sea to the peaks seen today. Shark fossils & mastodon bones have been found here.
